Most of the best things to do around Clearwater aren't on land. Here's what's actually out there — the sandbars, the barrier islands, the wildlife — and which of it you can only reach by boat.
A note on how this list works. Clearwater Beach itself is busy, and the water directly off it is the busiest part. Nearly everything worth doing is north — toward Dunedin, Caladesi, Honeymoon Island, and the small barrier islands past them.
Some of those places have ferries. Several don't. The ones that don't are usually the good ones.

Most of the swimming worth doing around Clearwater happens away from lifeguards — sandbars, island beaches, spots with no one else around. That's the appeal, and it's also the thing to think about.
