Why dolphin sightings are so common near Clearwater
The waters around Clearwater and St. Petersburg are exceptionally good dolphin habitat. The Intracoastal Waterway that runs behind the barrier islands is a natural feeding corridor — dolphins follow mullet, snook, and other baitfish through the channels on a daily basis. The passes between the barrier islands are active dolphin territory. The shallow Gulf waters near the sandbars are feeding grounds dolphins return to consistently.
Bottlenose dolphins near Clearwater are permanent residents — they don’t migrate south for winter or disappear seasonally. What do dolphin encounters actually look like?
When dolphins are spotted near Clearwater they typically behave in one of a few ways. Feeding dolphins are focused and surface repeatedly in a concentrated area — these encounters are exciting to watch but the dolphins are working and may not interact with the boat. Traveling dolphins move through an area steadily and can often be followed for a stretch of water.
