Honeymoon Island State Park sits off Dunedin at the northern end of the barrier-island chain near Clearwater. Visitors know it for Gulf beaches, nature trails, osprey habitat, and sweeping views across St. Joseph Sound.
But the shoreline is not static. Tides, currents, storms, sand movement, and vegetation are constantly reshaping these islands. From a boat, you can see that process happening in a way that is much harder to appreciate from a parking lot or beach access point.

The northern end changed dramatically after the 2024 storms
During the 2024 hurricane season, storm surge and tidal action reshaped the northern end of Honeymoon Island. A water cut that had been developing across the northern tip widened enough to separate a section of land from the main island.
What makes this area so interesting is that it is still evolving. Sand moves. Channels shift. Tides expose different parts of the shoreline. It feels less like visiting a finished attraction and more like seeing coastal Florida actively being created and reshaped.
Wayward Key Tours visits this area when conditions make it appropriate and safe to do so. Because it is a natural shoreline, access and landing conditions can change from one charter to the next.

Not everything memorable is a dolphin
On several visits around the northern end of Honeymoon Island, Captain Keith and guests have spotted marine life tucked into the shallows — including live sponges.
The sponge in this photo is one we actually saw there. It is a perfect example of why this area is so interesting: you never know what the tide will uncover or what will be visible in the clear shallow water.
We look, photograph, and enjoy these finds without turning them into souvenirs. The goal is to leave the shoreline and marine life where we found it.

- Bottlenose dolphins use channels, passes, and nearby Gulf and Intracoastal waters for travel and feeding.
