Welcome aboard Wayward Key Tours, your private charter boat that will take you on an extended coastal odyssey, venturing deeper into the captivating history and natural wonders of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Our voyage leads us to explore the barrier islands around St. Petersburg, where a world of island treasures awaits.

Unveiling the Tales of Fort De Soto: A Historical Journey through the Keys

As our captain, Keith, navigates our private charter, Wayward Key Tours, we find ourselves drawn into the intriguing tales of Fort De Soto—a historical gem nestled amidst the scenic wonders of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Comprising a cluster of keys on the interior of the barrier islands, this coastal destination boasts a rich history that unfolds in front of our eyes.

The Keys of Fort De Soto

Fort De Soto is not just a single island; it is a collection of keys, each with its own unique allure. The main keys that make up Fort De Soto are:

1. Mullet Key: The largest key in the group, Mullet Key forms the heart of Fort De Soto. This key houses the historic Fort De Soto, a military stronghold that played a pivotal role in safeguarding the coastal waters during times of conflict.

2. Egmont Key: While technically a separate key, Egmont Key is closely linked to the Fort De Soto area due to its historical significance and its proximity to Mullet Key. Egmont Key boasts the iconic Egmont Key Lighthouse, which has guided mariners through the entrance of Tampa Bay for generations. In 1858, a lighthouse was constructed on the island to guide ships safely through the treacherous waters. The lighthouse played a crucial role during the Civil War, serving as a strategic military outpost. In 1898, a fire damaged the lighthouse, which was promptly rebuilt the following year.

Today, Egmont Key is part of the Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge, where visitors can explore the historical remnants of the lighthouse and the island’s military past. It also serves as a sanctuary for seabirds, shorebirds, and nesting turtles, making it a captivating destination to discover tales of its past and embrace its coastal allure.

3. Outback Key: Tucked away from the main islands, Outback Key is a secluded retreat for those seeking a tranquil coastal experience amidst lush vegetation and unspoiled beauty.

Beyond the Fort: Natural Treasures

Beyond the historical fortifications, Fort De Soto beckons with its natural treasures. The area is renowned for its pristine beaches, coastal dunes, and vibrant marine life. As we navigate the keys, keep your eyes peeled for the playful dolphins and graceful manatees, offering a glimpse into the abundant wildlife that thrives in these waters.

Unraveling the Enigmatic History and Natural Wonders of Passage Key

Our island-hopping adventure continues with Passage Key, a once-thriving barrier island that now stands as a vanishing treasure. Dating back to the 19th century, Passage Key was a flourishing 60-acre oasis, home to a diverse array of bird species and teeming with life.

However, the forces of nature took their toll on the island, with a destructive hurricane in 1921 marking the beginning of its transformation. Subsequent hurricanes in 2005 further diminished Passage Key, reducing it to its present state—a fragile sandbar struggling to survive.

Today, Passage Key is designated a National Wildlife Refuge, serving as a sanctuary for a variety of avian species that rely on its undisturbed shores for nesting and feeding. While its unique natural beauty continues to captivate visitors, it’s important to note that the refuge is closed to all public use. Substantial shoaling in recent years has limited access to the sandbar, making it challenging for visitors to set foot on its disappearing shores.

Although you can’t set foot on the island, the surrounding waters at this sandbar are breathtaking, making it a favorite place to anchor. The water changes hues of turquoise depending on the water depth. Anchored boaters may witness the island’s allure, but it’s essential to remember that this once-thriving haven also bears the reputation of being clothing-optional.

As we continue our journey on our charter boat, Passage Key serves as a poignant reminder of nature’s delicate balance and the importance of preserving our coastal treasures. It stands as a living testament to the forces of time and nature, a sanctuary for migratory birds, and a place where history and the fleeting present converge in an enigmatic blend.

Shell Key: Shells of Course

Nestled within the coastal waters of Florida, Shell Key stands as a testament to the beauty and ecological richness of the region. Renowned for its vital role in hosting shorebird nesting and wintering, this island serves as a haven for fragile marine habitats. Unspoiled by development, it proudly retains its status as an undeveloped barrier island, adorned with lush seagrass meadows that dance beneath the crystal-clear waters.

This picturesque landscape has been wisely designated as a protected area, safeguarding its natural wonders for generations to come. Accessible by ferry or private charter, the 1828-acre archipelago guards the entrance to Tampa Bay.

Adventurers revel in the opportunity to collect sand dollars, while expert divers and beginners alike are enchanted by the pristine snorkeling conditions. The vibrant underwater world astounds with its diverse marine life, while the skies above teem with the mesmerizing presence of countless seabirds. And for those who prefer the tranquility of land, a leisurely stroll along the shore unveils yet another facet of Shell Key’s breathtaking charm.

Long Key: A Serene Escape

Next on our island-hopping journey is the tranquil Long Key, where we find ourselves surrounded by peaceful seclusion and natural beauty. The island’s pristine beaches invite us to bask in the sun or wade in the gentle waves. Colorful marine life flourishes beneath the surface, thrilling snorkeling enthusiasts.

Pass-a-Grille: A Beach Lover’s Paradise

As we approach Pass-a-Grille, the laid-back atmosphere immediately sets the stage for relaxation and rejuvenation. Stroll along the picturesque beach, where the soft sands beckon and beachcombers may find hidden treasures washed ashore. For wildlife enthusiasts, the area offers fantastic bird-watching opportunities, with various bird species frequenting the shoreline.

As our island-hopping adventure comes to a close, we leave with a heart full of cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for the captivating history and natural wonders of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Whether uncovering the secrets of Fort De Soto, witnessing the vanishing beauty of Passage Key, finding serenity on Long Key, or embracing the laid-back paradise of Pass-a-Grille, St. Petersburg’s Gulf Coast keys have left an indelible mark on our souls.
